Walk-in Robes vs Fitted Robes: Maximising Storage

Today, I'd like to share an experience that highlights the importance of thoughtful storage solutions in home design. Recently, I visited a stunning architecturally designed home in Western Australia. Upon reaching the master bedroom, I was presented with a common challenge: how to increase the robe area in a limited space.

The situation was far from ideal. The existing walk-in robe only provided enough space for the lady of the house, leaving her husband to use a built-in closet in another room. This arrangement was neither practical nor conducive to a harmonious living space. It was clear that a creative solution was needed to maximise storage while maintaining the architectural integrity of the home.

After careful consideration, I proposed an innovative approach: removing the partition wall and installing fitted robes. This transformation yielded remarkable results. The new fitted robes not only doubled the hanging space for shirts and pants but also provided single hanging for longer items. Additionally, the inclusion of internal drawers and shelves significantly increased the overall storage capacity compared to the original walk-in robe.

The benefits of this redesign extended beyond mere storage. By optimising the use of space, we actually managed to make the master bedroom appear larger. The new 'his and hers' robes created a more organised and equitable storage solution for the couple, enhancing their daily routines and overall living experience.

It's worth noting that walk-in robes aren't always a lost cause. In many of my renovation projects across Western Australia, I've successfully modified walk-in robes to incorporate double hanging and internal shelves. These adaptations have proven to be excellent storage solutions in their own right. However, it's crucial to remember that each project is unique and requires a case-by-case assessment to determine the most effective approach.

As a designer and renovator, I'm thrilled about the opportunity to present this storage solution to complement the beautiful architectural design of the home. It's a perfect example of how thoughtful modifications can enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of a space.

When it comes to choosing between walk-in robes and fitted robes, there's no one-size-fits-all answer. The key lies in carefully evaluating the specific needs of the homeowners and the constraints of the space. With creative thinking and expert design, it's possible to transform storage challenges into opportunities for improvement, ultimately enhancing the liveability and value of a home.
